A Message To the Girlfriends:
I got the news while waiting for my flight at the Pittsburgh airport. This beautiful, soulful, remarkable woman- my girlfriend Krystyna-was gone. How could this be?
On the plane, a nighttime flight, I looked out at the heavens from 30,000 feet and I wondered, “Are you out there?” Then, “What happened, sweetheart?”
After hearing the sad news, we did what Krystyna would have done- we mobilized. That is, we turned our grief into a project that would leverage our creativity, technology and would most certainly touch others in a helpful way. So we embarked on the saddest project of our careers, to build and populate this website as a tribute to our lovely Girlfriend.
My desktop and file folders are littered with pictures and statistics about this awesome woman, who was always larger than life to me. I am eternally grateful that Krystyna was such an organized and generous documentarian of her own life. Who would have guessed that her websites, filled with facts, photos and articles, would have helped out her friends in our time of need? But that was Krystyna. Thorough. Organized. Always thinking of others.
I began to think about the many people she touched on a daily basis, with words of hope, encouragement, and her famous, “you GO, Girl!” Krystyna poured her energies and soul into many causes, but she had a special place in her heart for The Girlfriends. How many of us received the emails filled with laughter, gratitude and the zest for life, self-awareness and truth that she embodied? I saved a recent “girl survey” from May 2006 with her frank answers and insights into her life and values, and I am so glad I did. (To read Krystyna’s survey, click here)
To Krystyna, the term “Girlfriend” had a rather loose definition. I happen to know a few guys whom she treated as “Girlfriends,” and they are better men for it. In fact, they are probably reading this right now. You know who you are, gentlemen.
About this Site: We all know Krystyna was incredibly creative and had a unique flair for design. She loved color, and did not shy away from boldness. We chose the sunflower on the home page because of its bold color, but also because it is a humble yet sturdy plant that can grow and flourish, even in the most adverse conditions. Also, it matched her photo quite nicely. (A Girlfriend touch!)
We want this site to be a Celebration of Life and a warm tribute to Krystyna. But we also need it to be cathartic, and for some of us, a place to laugh and grieve. Please share with us your memories, thoughts and messages. The rest, I’ll leave to you.
You GO, Girls!
